SUMMARY:Tot Discovery Day: Oregon-ology
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 4th  | 9am – Noon\nFrom desert to coast\, explore the science behind our state! In our Oregon-ology Tot Day we will explore the salmon life cycle\, crawl through a replica lava tube and discover a tide pool. Get answers to questions like\, how were the painted hills created? How can scientists tell the age of a tree?  Join us on the first Friday in January. \nAnd don’t miss our Tot Day planetarium show at 10:30 and 11am. Tickets are included with Tot Day admission. Seating is limited. \nMore about Tot Discovery Days: Each month we set up activities and interactive learning stations designed to create an experience that will ignite your child’s curiosity and interest in science. Tot Discovery Days are casual\, drop-in programs when our youngest visitors can enjoy Eugene Science Center activities “big-kid-free” \nAdmission to Tot Day is $10 for the first parent-child pair\, $2 for each additional child and $5 for each additional adult. Eugene Science Center members receive free admission to Tot Day. \nFor more info\, visit https://eugenesciencecenter.org/events/early-education/

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party
DESCRIPTION:The Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party is canceled due to considerable cloudiness.\nYou can watch the eclipse virtually at: https://www.timeanddate.com/live/\n\nJoin us on the evening of Sunday\, January 20 at Eugene Science Center to enjoy a Total Lunar Eclipse! \nDuring a Total Lunar Eclipse\, the full moon travels through the Earth’s shadow and turns a deep red color for about an hour. In Eugene\, the moon will start to enter the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow at 7:33pm. The moon will be completely covered in the Earth’s red shadow from 8:41pm to 9:43pm. Learn more about timing and what the eclipse will look like. \nWe will have several telescopes set up to offer close-up views of the moon during the eclipse. Please note that eclipse viewing will be weather permitted! We will post updates on the status of our viewing party on the night of the eclipse. \nSpecial thanks to the Eugene Astronomical Society for co-hosting this event and helping share telescopic views of the lunar eclipse. While you don’t need a telescope to view a total lunar eclipse\, they can give incredible views of craters and mountains on the lunar surface during an eclipse. \n\nEugene Astronomical Society Star Party Dos and Dont’s:\n– DO dress warmly!\n– DO Ask questions! Amateur astronomers love to share what we’ve learned about the night sky. Star parties tend to be informal\, with several telescopes set up. Don’t be shy; come on up and say “Hi” and have a look.\n– DON’T bring your dog. In the dark\, they could cause accidents if they get underfoot.\n– DO check the weather. Star parties are always “weather permitting.” Check the sky before you set out to spare yourself a trip if the sky is cloudy.\n– DO preserve your night vision and everyone else’s. It takes up to 20 minutes for eyes to adapt to the dark. A single burst of bright light can ruin that for everyone. If you carry a flashlight\, use the dimmest light you can\, and cover the lens with red filter film. (Red light isn’t quite as damaging to night vision as white light.) Automotive brake-light repair tape works well. You might need several layers. Remember that once your eyes adapt to the dark\, it doesn’t take much light to see your way around–or to ruin your night vision.\n– DON’T use your cell phone around others. Cell phone screens are way too bright to use at star parties. Please go a long ways from the group before using your cell phone. \nChildren are welcome\, but before you allow your child to look through a telescope\, explain to them how to clasp their hands behind their backs and simply look into the eyepiece\, not touching any part of the telescope. Fingerprints can ruin an eyepiece\, and eyepieces can be very expensive. Practice this at home with a pair of binoculars or a toilet-paper tube. If they cannot follow this procedure\, please do not bring them to a star party. \nFor more star party tips and information\, visit http://www.eugeneastro.org/starparties
