Meet A Scientist
March 23 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Scientists are visiting Eugene Science Center! Meet scientists from our community, learn about their exciting research, and ask questions!
Join us on Saturday, March 23rd to meet our Scientists of the Month: Rose Hulsey-Vincent, Tim Mathew, and Willow Davis!
Included with general admission, free for ESC members.
About this month’s scientists:
Rose Hulsey-Vincent is a graduate student in the Gardner Lab at the University of Oregon, where she researches how songbirds’ brains plan and coordinate the order of syllables in their songs. As a former fencing coach and competitive fencer, she is interested in studying how animals plan and execute complex movements, such as speaking or singing. Before UO, she studied biophysics at Vassar College, where she helped develop an optical setup to study how microorganisms move. After college she worked as a research technician at Janelia Research Campus, where she studied how fruit flies navigate.
Tim Mathew, a PhD candidate at the University of Oregon, works on the ATLAS experiment which is a multi-purpose detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a particle collider located at CERN. His research involves searches for dark matter using data collected with ATLAS, as well as developing software for the upcoming High Luminosity LHC upgrades to the ATLAS detector. Much of his time is spent traveling to CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, collaborating with fellow scientists.
Willow Davis is currently a chemistry PhD candidate in her 4th year at UO. Her research in the DWJ lab centers around the physical organic chemistry and synthesis of sulfur containing cyclic molecules for use in sensing and single molecule delivery applications. She is also currently the president of UO’s Women in Graduate Science organization.
